FAQs

What is a midwife?

A midwife is a health care provider who specializes in the care of low-risk people during pregnancy and birth, but also provides preventive and gynecologic care outside of pregnancy. The midwifery model of care places value on centering the client, careful monitoring, avoiding unnecessary intervention, informed consent, and cultivating respectful, non-judgmental client-provider spaces.

Is Out of Hospital Birth safe?

It is, for many people! Community Birth can be not only a safe but also incredibly fulfilling option for people with low-risk pregnancies. During our initial consultation, we’ll talk about your health history to see if there’s anything that could make community birth an unsafe option for you. At your first prenatal visit, we discuss conditions and events that could necessitate a change of plan for your birth, should they develop during your pregnancy or labor. We monitor your status through prenatal screening tests, after discussing them with you and obtaining your consent, as well as taking the time to get to know your normal. Your status, and your baby’s status, are assessed and monitored regularly at each visit, and closely during labor and birth. We think of it as setting a perimeter of safety around your experience, and then leaving as much space as possible for it to be your experience. We talk about this in much more detail during your visits.

Do I have to be pregnant to see a midwife?

You don’t! We provide other types of care too. See the Services page for more info! We also collaborate with and refer to other healthcare providers as needed.

Do you accept health insurance?

Yes! Vida Midwifery accepts all NM Medicaid/Turquoise plans, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, TRICARE, and Molina Marketplace.

Labwork, ultrasound fees, and any pharmacy or hospital costs are billed directly to your insurance through the outside providers for those services.

We also offer affordable self-pay rates, including a flat fee for prenatal, birth, postpartum and newborn care as well as per-visit fees for well-body and gynecologic care. Please contact our office for more information.
